Diocesan Life

The Diocese of Springfield of Illinois was formed 150 years ago. The term "diocese", originally meaning the management of a household, was once used in Roman law to specify territories which were under their jurisdiction.

The term was retained in the early formation of the church, and hence, the evolution to this day. Each diocese is served by the clergy, who are successors of the Apostles. They administer the sacraments to the people through Holy Orders. There are 188 dioceses in the United States, including Guam, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

"Simon, son of John, do you love me?" "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep" "Follow me." ~John 21:15-19
